POSITION TITLE: Public Relations & Communications Manager

COUNCIL OVERVIEW: Richly diverse and growing Girl Scout Council serving 18,000 inner city, urban and suburban girls and young women in Santa Clara County. Forty-seven full-time, 20-150 seasonal staff and 6000 volunteers provide programs that empower girls and young women to make life-enhancing decisions, develop self esteem, and be active, contributing members of our community.

BASIC FUNCTION: Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of a public relations, marketing and communications plan to promote the contemporary image of Girl Scouts in Santa Clara County.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       Coordinate media relations including planning publicity campaigns, writing and distributing press and broadcast releases, responding to spontaneous public relations and promotion opportunities and establishing media contacts. Act as an official media spokesperson.

2.       Cultivate and maintain community contacts to develop and expand public awareness and support of Girl Scouting.

3.       Ensure the effectiveness and high quality of communications materials and presentations for diverse internal and external audiences. Design and/or develop and produce all agency publications. Provide writing, editing, layout and quality control services to employees and volunteers. Write and edit presentations.

4.       Serve as a member of the Crisis Communications Team and as a key communicator during crisis communications. Provide training and support to employee and volunteer spokespersons.

5.       Provide on-going marketing and public relations support to the agency Capital Campaign and Board committees.

6.       Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of yearly plans and budget; provide written and oral progress reports.

QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience. Special training in community relations, marketing and/or journalism desirable.

·         Minimum of two years hands-on experience in community relations, media, marketing, journalism or closely related work.

·         Excellent written and oral communications skills.

·         Experience planning and organizing programs and events.

·         Ability to cultivate, motivate and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, media, community contacts, staff and volunteers from diverse backgrounds.

·         Ability to use a computer keyboard and communicate effectively by phone and email daily.

·         Ability to handle several projects simultaneously, prioritize work and handle last minute demands appropriately.

·         Experience with Microsoft Office’s applications and PageMaker.

·         Commitment to the empowerment of girls and women.

·         Valid drivers license; willingness to work flexible hours, evenings and weekends.

HOURS:                                Full-time; occasional evenings/weekends; flexible schedule.

HIRING RANGE:                $38-$43K (depending on experience) plus benefits (including medical/dental/vision insurance, health club membership, 9 holidays plus 1 floating holiday and winter holiday break, 16 PTO days, 401K and Girl Scout retirement plans, flexible spending plan)
